Catherine’s Monologue Essay A few minutes earlier, when I was dancing with Rodolpho to â€Å"Paper Doll,† I started thinking. I started thinking how much my life had changed these past few months, and how much I have changed. My life has changed in that I have two new people in it, one of which I think I love. I have a job and I now feel more independent. It’s a good feeling. Well that’s setting the scene for you, I guess its time to let it all out. Eddie has been like a surrogate father to me. I’ve always felt comfortable around him; I’ve been able to talk to him†¦but lately, all that security has just dissolved. It’s almost the opposite. We can’t have a normal conversation without fighting. I mean for example, a few days ago I came home with Rodolpho from a movie at the paramount. I started telling him about movie, I was so excited. But all he did was start-shooting questions as me, † Where’d you go? Brooklyn Paramount? † Of course I went to Brooklyn Paramount! Where else would I go? He knows that I wouldn’t go to New York! Then he tells Rodolpho he wants to talk to me alone. He starts telling me how he never sees me anymore, his face looked so sad. I started to reassure him, that of course he still saw me, it was just Rodolpho wanted to do so much, see so many things, so I take him. Suddenly he asked me, â€Å"Do you like him? † I answered, â€Å"Yes†, and it all went down hill from there. He started saying horrible things like, Rodolpho was only interested in my to gain citizenship and how he was only using me and had no respect for me. That wasn’t Eddie speaking. I had never known Eddie to be like that ever. Sure, he had always been slightly over-protective, but never like this before. After the â€Å"incident† B came and talked to me. She told me how I had to grow up. Be my own person; make him understand that I wasn’t a little girl anymore. She pointed out things to me that I had never noticed before, like how I used to walk around in front of him in my slip or sit on the edge of the bathtub and talk to him while he was shaving in his underwear. I never even thought about that before. But B, she notices these things sharp. I don’t know, she just seemed really eager for me to get out of the house, get married, leave. She even asked me if I thought she was jealous of me! When she said that, I had never thought about it before. But since she has said that, I’ve started to think about it more and more. Could B be jealous? Of me? Its absurd! B, who is so kind, and sweet and who I love so much like a mother, be jealous of me? It just doesn’t fit. I don’t know why I even thought of it. I guess I’m just thinkin’ crazy these days. And last of all, Rodolpho. I think I love him, actually I am quite sure now, I do love him. Should I marry him? What other option do I have? Like B said, I can’t just stay here all my life. But the thing is, I’m scared. I’m scared of Eddie. I didn’t think I would ever say that, but it’s the truth. When I say Eddie and Rodolpho boxing, and the look on Eddies face, I knew somethin’ wasn’t right. Beatrice didn’t get it, I think Marco did. Maybe he’s just doing it to protect me? The internet could be used in so many ways, including promoting the sale of single songs instead of depending on selling whole albums like it was done in the traditional CD sales. Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is generally considered to be the first American symbolic novel. A symbol is something which is used to represent something broader in meaning. The most obvious symbol in the novel is the actual scarlet "A" which both the criticism and I agree upon. This "A" is the literal symbol of the sin of adultery. The letter A then appears in many different forms throughout the novel. The gold-embroidered A on Hester Prynne's fascinates Pearl Prynne. It is magnified in the armor breast plate at Governor Bellingham's mansion which is so extreme that it seems to hide and cover Hester. On the night of Arthur Dimmesdale vigil, he sees a red A in the sky. And finally, the letter is revealed on Dimmsdale's chest in front of the whole village. The A also takes on many meanings. It has the original meaning as well as different meanings to various characters. To Hester, the A means humiliation. The A to Dimmesdale is a reminder of his own contrition. To Pearl, the A is peculiarity and Roger Chillingworth sees the A as a journey for retaliation. Other then adultery, the A can also stand for "Angel" and "Able". Angel, for it appears in the sky after Governor Winthrop's death. Able, for Hester has won the respect of the Puritans even if she has sinned terribly. Hawthorne uses the prison building to describe crime and punishment in contrast with the tombstone at the end of ... ...t price is Hester's reputation and her standing in the community. Pearl is also a self-contained symbol. The result of her parent's sin is shown in her often imprudent comments and unbridled behavior. Each character in the novel suffers from a sin which they try to crush and bemoan with goodness from their own heart. The Scarlet Letter is a book filled with symbolism. I feel the symbolism helps to relate a situation to a position the reader knows about. The critic which I based this on feels that there is voluminous accounts of symbolism, even too much. I must disagree with this. Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter is an amazingly written book for its time with just the right amount of powerful symbolism.

Passion. What is passion? Passion can be described in two words: strong and uncontrollable. We can’t control how we feel about the people, activities, and ideas in our lives. Passion isn’t always a good thing; too much of it can render a person incompetent. Everyone has a passion of their own and they pursue it in a different way. My passion is the game of lacrosse. I love every aspect of the game: playing, coaching, and officiating. I started playing lacrosse when I was eight years old and I have loved it every since. I was one of those kids that played every sport up until seventh grade, which was when I had a decision to make: what sport am I going to take seriously. I no longer had time for everything that I wanted to do. I knew right away that lacrosse was going to be the major sport in my life. I played volleyball in the fall and lacrosse year round. I quit dance, basketball, snowboarding, and running and I devoted myself to lacrosse. I played up for my high school while I was still in middle school and I played for a travel team  that competed at tournaments in front of college coaches. I decided freshman year that I wanted to play in college; and so my search began looking for the perfect school and program. During this process, I became more and more involved with the sport. I became a certified official and I began assistant coaching. I can honestly say that I love my job. I have the opportunity to pass down the skills I have accumulated over the years to new playing of the game. Being part of a team means having a big family. Lacrosse controls every aspect of my life. It’s what I write about in school. It’s what my mind is focused on 95% of the time. Some people say I am too invested in the game, but it’s what makes me a better player. I know the game and I can read the field. I’m a smart player and I have become this way because lacrosse controls me; but I let it control me in a healthy way. It keeps me active and in shape and gives me skills that are needed in the real world: teamwork, common goals, and never giving up. Lacrosse is my passion and I never want to give it up.
